The albums Load (1996) and Reload (1997) saw them move away from thrash metal and towards alternative rock and hard rock. Although these changes were met with mixed reactions from fans, they were still commercially successful.

The band faced a number of personal and professional challenges in the 2000s, which are chronicled in the documentary Some Kind of Monster. Despite the difficulties, they continued to release new albums and tour, demonstrating resilience and dedication to their craft. The albums St. Anger (2003), Death Magnetic (2008), and Hardwired…to Self-Destruct (2016) marked a return to a heavier sound while maintaining an experimental approach.
