Founded in 1970 with the support of King Faisal bin Abdul-Alziz, the university received its current name in 2008 when King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz granted it university status in honor of Noura bint Abdul Rahman, the elder sister and advisor of King Abdulaziz bin Saud. as well as the eldest daughter of Abdul Rahman bin Faisal, the last emir of the Second Saudi State.
